A child genius, quiet and clever Bertrand is an escapee of the Institut International de Recherche Génétique (International Institute of Genetic Research), where they were conducting secret and illegal human testing. Upon his escape he began to spend all of his time, combing museums and vowing to defend everything kept there in a rather ingenious way: he steals something from them, and then returns it with a note: "Il n'y a rien qui ne peut pas être pris" ("there is nothing that cannot be taken"). This forces the museums to increase their security. Although his identity is well known, the facility he escaped from keep the police from capturing him lest what they are doing be discovered, although they have yet to catch him themselves. Bertrand also only has one leg, although whether he lost his other at the Institut or after he left is unknown.
